The Indiana Departure of Natural Resources claims April to May is the best time for morel mushroom hunting in Indiana. Many love the taste of morels and claim the “meaty” and “nutty” taste contribute to their popularity.

Found throughout North America, morels are the best known edible mushroom. Many are small measuring three to five inches; however, some may be found up to a foot tall. They range in colors from blonde to black.

These typically grow on the edge of forested areas near ash, aspen, elm, and oak trees. Many claim the most popular spots are around decayed vegetation in moist areas. Others state to search in and around dead trees and leaf piles. Please be sure that no matter when you hunt, you hunt responsibly WITH permission (as to not trespass on private property.
